And the Winners Are…

When it comes to creativity and impacting people’s lives, the Golden Globes and Academy Awards can take a back seat to the 2017 Risk Management Grant and Recognition winners. “This year’s winners definitely were thinking outside the box in developing their solutions to safety issues,” says Tim Lenac, PDRMA Risk Management Services Supervisor. “Some built custom solutions while others took a fresh approach to solving their safety issue.”

The 2017 winners earned cash grants between $500 and $2,500, awarded by PDRMA’s Risk Management Committee. If you have a new solution that is working for you, you may already have a winning 2018 grant to submit. Click here to download the grant application and email it to RMGrant@pdrma.org throughout the year until the Sept. 7 deadline for 2018.

Blind Spot Remedy at Pools
BarringtonBuffalo Grove Park District prevented blind spots from glare on the pool surface with a Glare Board, which is a small white board with the pool zone on it, so lifeguards can identify blind spots and determine how to scan a given zone thoroughly.

Modifying Equipment to Reduce Strain
BarringtonBy modifying how its bulk sprayer attached to its ZTR mower, Buffalo Grove Park District reduced lifting strain on staff with the extra benefit of allowing operators to multi-task when mowing.

Improved Procedures
BarringtonChampaign Park District improved procedures and rules for unsupervised minors to curb injuries and personal-property thefts among pool patrons. Now anyone entering the facility without a guardian must be at least 13 years old and submit a state- or agency-issued photo ID before entering the pool.

New Lift for Snowmobiles
BarringtonThe Forest Preserve District of Kane County reduced staff injuries with a pneumatic snowmobile lift. The lift moves the district’s 620-pound snowmobiles off the maintenance shop floor and onto a stationary stand.

Core 6 Vinyl Wrap
BarringtonFrankfort Square Park District provides a daily Core 6 reminder to every employee with a 25’ x 10’ vinyl wrap on the employee entrance door.

Streamlined Golf Maintenance
BarringtonBy re-engineering its procedures to move up to 1,000 pounds of golf balls from the driving range to the cleaner and back to the range ball vending machine, Franklin Square Park District lessened the strain and effort on staff. New procedures call for using smaller collection baskets, a new, hands-free ramp that funnels the balls directly into the washer, and a custom-built shoot to load the golf balls back into the cart automatically for delivery to the vending machine.

Safer Lifeguard Attire
BarringtonBarringtonGenoa Township Park District changed its attire rules for lifeguards with breakaway lanyards for them along with t-shirts bearing safety messages, so patrons can always see them: on one side the shirts read “If your child is in the water, you should be, too;” the other side displays a word graphic of additional pool rules.

Aquatic Safety Video
BarringtonLombard Park District educates visitors about safety at Paradise Bay Water Park before they even arrive with an instructional video on its website. The video addresses rules, regulations, basic safety, and safety topics like slide height, water depth and running hazards.

Improved Staff Training Plans
BarringtonMcHenry County Conservation District purchased Power DMS software to help develop, implement, distribute, manage and track its new-staff training plan as well as its Standard Operation Procedures.

Safer Patron Lift
BarringtonNortheast DuPage Special Recreation Association purchased a Hoyer Lift to provide a safer way for staff to lift and transfer certain participants — and prevent injuries to both from improper lifting techniques.

New Equipment for Safe Independence
BarringtonNorthern Suburban Special Recreation Association’s new equipment limits the amount of staff lifting for participant transfers to and from wheelchairs while encouraging participant mobility and independence. The Rifton TRAM uses an innovative support system without slings for a safer transfer.

Improved, Safer Seating
BarringtonSouth Suburban Special Recreation Association worked with Best Bus Sales to develop a vehicle seat wedge to avoid strap-slippage issues when using a harness in a Freeman Highback Seat.

Safer Signage
BarringtonVernon Hills Park District purchased soft edging to cover the sharp edges of its playground safety signs to prevent any harm should an inattentive child run into them.

Padding Surfaces
BarringtonWoodridge Park District prevented injuries on its turf fields by covering selected surfaces with red safety padding to prevent injuries to players who run out of bounds.
