PDRMA continues to provide member police staffs with training opportunities through the Police Law Institute’s (PLI) online legal training programs at no additional cost through its latest negotiated agreement with PLI.

“All full-time, part-time and seasonal officers have a 12-month subscription to PLI’s Monthly Legal Updates and Review (MLUR) as well as access to online legal training programs,” explains Tim Lenac, PDRMA Risk Management Services Supervisor. The national leader in police training, PLI has more than 50,000 police officers nationwide that use its training programs.

The primary goal of the training is to inform officers and keep them safe, which also reduces the risk of civil liability. PLI works with attorneys and lawyers to stay current with legislative changes as well.

The MLUR online training program covers the latest U.S. and Illinois Appellate and Supreme Court decisions and new legislation focused on law-enforcement liability. It uses scenario-based lessons along with competency exams to ensure a superior learning experience. Interactive, real-world scenarios demonstrate how important it is to apply legal concepts appropriately in the field.

“This training is the gold standard,” points out Bill Hooker, PDRMA Training Program Supervisor. “It covers high-risk areas and state-mandated topics such as legal use of force, search and seizures, and racial profiling among other hot topics. With the added convenience of 24/7 availability, downloadable lesson summaries, monthly legal updates and scenario-based learning, the training is ideal for park district and forest preserve police departments.

The online availability also speeds record keeping. PLI reports all officers’ prior-months mandated training to their respective Mobile Training Unit and submits the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Training Mandates into the appropriate reporting system.

“It’s a worthwhile investment in our police officers,” adds Lenac, “and we’re pleased to offer this training to PDRMA members. Should your agency have paid any fees for using the PLI Program in 2018, you will receive a refund of that cost and can continue to access the PLI training without fees.”
