There’s H.E.L.P. for Best Practices in Human Resources
PDRMA’s training for supervisors and managers this fall feature two H.E.L.P. courses along with other classes, so you can stay up to date on performance and legal issues impacting employees. These classes fill up quickly — and some have prerequisites — so review the requirements below and register today!
H.E.L.P. — Essentials of Human Resources (H.E.L.P 1). More than 4,000 supervisors have benefitted from this comprehensive training, which includes both online and classroom modules. You can access online delivery of Module 1 — Essentials of Employment Law and Policy and Module 2 — Recruiting and Hiring on PDRMA’s Online Learning Center. After completing them, you can register for the two-day class (Modules 3 – 5) Sept. 18 – 19 at Northbrook Park District. Learn the essentials of employment law and policy, performance management, balancing employer/employee rights, and discipline. Participants finish with interactive case histories to reinforce the lessons learned. Anyone who recruits, hires, supervises, manages, disciplines or enforces policy should attend this class. (There are additional classes Oct. 23 and Dec. 4.) If you’ve taken H.E.L.P. 1 before, PDRMA recommends you consider registering for H.E.L.P. 2.
Managing Employee Performance and Conducting Effective Performance Evaluations (H.E.L.P. 2). The second class deals with employee performance and performance reviews. (H.E.L.P. 1 is recommended but not required.) Scheduled Sept. 19 at Lisle Park District, this course helps managers address the tricky issues of managing performance and helping employees take corrective action. Space is limited, but additional classes are available Oct. 24 and Dec. 5.
Wage and Hour Seminar. Seasoned labor law attorneys — from Laner Muchin along with PDRMA’s Deputy General Counsel Sara Yager — update attendees on recent changes to the Illinois Minimum Wage Act. Executive directors, finance directors, human resources managers and facility managers will learn how to avoid the compliance pitfalls of new wage and hour laws, get tips on drafting reimbursement policies compliant with new provisions and learn how to compensate employees properly for overtime in hourly dual-rate situations. Mark your calendars for this session Oct. 29 at Carol Stream Park District from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Reasonable Suspicion Drug and Alcohol Training for Supervisors. On Jan. 1, 2020, Illinois joins several other states in allowing the recreational use of marijuana. The law requires many PDRMA members to change their drug policies and testing practices. PDRMA’s legal staff is reviewing the law and will soon make a new model policy available to members and host a webinar on the topic. The Nov. 15 Risk Management Institute will also include a breakout session on this topic.
PDRMA encourages you to register for its Reasonable Suspicion Drug and Alcohol Training for Supervisors course in September or October and to contact your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for training options on this topic. PDRMA members can take advantage of a special $250/hour rate with Workplace Solutions EAP for a two-hour, private, on-site training. Consider cosponsoring a class with a neighboring agency to split the cost.
