2013 PDRMA Training – Great Benefits from your Bucks

Brad Gardner - Trainer2013 PDRMA Training — Great Benefits from Your Bucks

If you are feeling the pinch in your training budget, you can get more bang for your buck by taking advantage of the grants, subsidy programs and resources available through PDRMA’s Education & Training offerings.

“If 2013 is the year your agency plans to implement a PIPP program, we have classes, videos and member testimonials to help you tailor a program to meet your needs,” explains Bill Hooker, Training Program Supervisor. “And a great way to bring that safety message home to your employees and truly inspire them is by attending Brad Gardner’s “Dominoes: Don’t Just Let Them Fall” presentation, which continues to receive rave reviews from PDRMA members.” (See details below.)

A variety of subsidized training for Park Police is available as well as certification courses for playground maintenance staff and Safety Coordinators. Below are some of the highlights of our 2013 training schedule.

PIPP
The PDRMA Injury Prevention Program (PIPP) targets job tasks that most frequently injure staff. We offer resources and training programs at no additional cost to your agency to help reduce workers’ compensation claims, the number-one loss leader for PDRMA members. Our back safety course and downloadable video can prepare your employees for an injury-free season while fulfilling the training requirements of your Loss Control Review.

  • March 5 – Back Safety and Ergonomics School for Maintenance Staff – Cary Park District.
  • March 7 – Back Safety and Ergonomics School for Maintenance Staff – Hickory Hills Park District.
  • Downloadable video – PIPP Model Stretching Programs

In addition to our downloadable video, you can request Videos on Demand — short, topic-specific videos you can download and present as part of your in-service training for Golf, SRAs, Aquatics and Parks Maintenance staff. Many are also offered in Spanish. Below are just a few of the many choices:

Brad Gardner - TrainerMotivate Your Staff to Be Safe
Let your staff hear first-hand from Brad Gardner, the victim of a life-changing, work-related incident that was the result of him taking safety for granted. He talks about why safety is important and how taking shortcuts can affect you, your family, your organization and everyone you love. Brad has presented his message to more than 600 PDRMA member staff who have commented, “This program is the only safety program a guy needs to hear,” “Brad will make me rethink my commitment to safety,” and “Everyone should hear this message. It is a great wake-up call.” If you send your staff to just one safety training event in 2013, make it Dominoes: Don’t Just Let Them Fall. Fee $10 per person.

Address your Park Police risk exposures for $35 per year, per officer by taking advantage of the PDRMA subsidized Police Law Institute Monthly Legal Update & Review online training subsidy, a savings of more than $90 per officer. One of the greatest liability exposures for law enforcement is driving. To help manage this risk, PDRMA offers a subsidy to member police departments for attending tactical/emergency driving training. Programs that qualify for the subsidy include offerings by Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Academy ($200), Illinois North East Multi-Regional Training ($100), and other select mobile training unit programs ($100). For more information about this subsidy program, contact Bill Hooker, Education and Training Program Supervisor.

HELP — Human Resources Employment Liability Program
PDRMA’s HELP program provides the training you need to manage your workforce and continue to develop your skills in human resources and employee management. Our 2.5-day HELP: Essentials of Human Resources course establishes a base of knowledge, but members wanted more. On March 13 at Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and on March 14 at Northbrook Park District we will offer HELP II: Managing Employee Performance and Conducting Effective Performance Evaluations — A HELP II Program.

Playground Inspection and Maintenance Training
Be part of our one-of-a-kind playground maintenance safety program presented in cooperation with Clemson University throughout the United States. Playground Maintenance: A Comprehensive Program for Managing Safe Playgrounds is for all staff that maintains, repairs, inspects and manages playgrounds. Upon completing the program, participants earn certification as a Playground Maintenance Technician. To register for the March 19 and 20 class at Huntley Park District or the Dec. 4 and 5 class in the Wood Dale area, log in to the PDRMA website and go to the Education & Training menu. Click Training Calendar and then click to the correct month. Locate the class name, click More Info and the green Register button.

If you have staff who are new to inspecting playgrounds, be sure to register them for the April 3 Fundamentals of Playground Inspection at Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association.

Safety Coordinator Curriculum
Whether you are a new Safety Coordinator or experienced in the position, you will benefit from completing PDRMA’s Safety Coordinator Curriculum. Congratulations and thanks to the 40 Safety Coordinators who have completed the curriculum and earned their Level One Certification.
